I'm just a girl, originally from Queens, New York, who started out as a Certified Public Accountant working on Wall Street. I knew right away this was not the life for me, so I packed all my belongings into a small envelope and headed out West to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming an actress. After working hard for many years to get auditions, I realized I was hardly ever working. I decided I wanted more control over my destiny, so I opened up the first sugar-free/vegan/gluten-free/allergy-free bakery in Los Angeles, Sweet Debbie's Organic Cupcakes. As soon as I opened the doors ALL the producers, directors, and studio heads who had wanted nothing to do with me before, were now knocking on my ovens clamoring for cupcakes, brownies, cookies and donut holes. A-list actors and actresses were calling me up and ordering for their children's birthday parties. I had finally made it in Hollywood.
Then my son was born with severe and life threatening food allergies. I knew I couldn't own a bakery where my son couldn't have a treat, so I reformulated all my goods to be free of the top 8 food allergens: dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. Business quadrupled within the first year. But since not everyone has access to my bakery, I decided to write down all my recipes so that anyone who wished to recreate them, could do so in the comfort of their own kitchen. This became my award-winning cookbook, Sweet Debbie's Organic Treats: Allergy-free & Vegan Recipes from the Famous Los Angeles Bakery.
Soon after my first book was published, I read The China Study, the groundbreaking book that proved a plant based diet helps prevent and even reverse disease. This book completed me and was the start of my plant powerful renaissance. I became a plant-based-meal-making machine, and as karma would have it, the publisher of The China Study offered me a publishing deal to write my second cookbook, Sweet, Savory & Free: Insanely Delicious Plant-Based Recipes without ANY of the Top 8 Food Allergens.
